I moved to Naples FL in 1989 from Connecticut.
I have been in the plantation shutter business of over 26 years. In my first year I started selling shutters for a friend. One year later I opened my own shutter business and eight years later I was asked if I would help a company that made specialty shapes. The company was North American Sunburst. I was in charge of sales. At first we sold only to the Florida market then we expanded to selling all over the United States and soon started sending our specialty products out of the country. I worked for Ted Morse the owner. N.A.S. made all kind of specialty items for the shutter industry. Here is a LINK to a few of the items they built.
While making deliveries to other shutter companies I noticed a big difference in the quality of what was being built by some shutter companies. I knew good quality meant repeat business. I had a hard time understanding why some companies where more interested in profit than quality. I was a good lesson to learn,
I learned a lot from others.
The longer you do something the more you learn. We all learn from people we meet. I learned a lot from people that had a great interest in quality. Here are some names of people that helped me understand the Plantation Shutter business over the years. Ted Morse who ran North American Sunburst Was a great help. So was Bill Lee who owned and operated San Bonito Shutter in California. I also learned a great deal from a man named Ed Solomon from Miami who passed away about ten years ago. I loved this man and learned more from him than anyone else.
Early in 2008 I was approached by Bill Lee the owner of San Benito Shutter and asked if I wanted to help him get established on the east coast of the USA. Bill brought me to Hollister Ca. to visit his shutter manufacturing plant. I was very impressed with his operation. Bill is a real gentleman and a great business man. I starting working for him in October of 2008 and was very happy to be a part of his success.
Most of my work with Bill Lee consisted with building sales in the Florida market. At present Bill is the largest supplier of shutter components on the east coast and is still growing nation wide. I retired in September of 2009.
